Description

A quirky and unusual large egg shaped pendant; finely carved with three storks against a chrysanthemum flower and foliate backdrop. In Japanese culture the stork represents prosperity and longevity, and the chrysanthemum motif representing the imperial family and rejuvenation. This is a beautifully hand-carved piece and such a lovely size. Great statement piece on its own or layered with other over-sized charms.

ERA: Hard to date but estimated to be 1930-1950s judging by style of carving and construction.

MATERIAL: Animal Bone or Ivory. Bale is yellow metal (not gold)

ORIGIN: Likely Japanese rather than Chinese due to the style of carving and imagery of the storks and chrysanthemums.

SIZE: 1.75″ high not including bale.

WEIGHT: 25.5 grams – a nice solid piece.

CONDITION: Great vintage condition. Carving is nicely done with 3D relief work. No chips or breakages that I can see. Even cream colour tone. This is really quite a quirky little item – it may have been made into a pendant from another item. I initially thought this might be a perfume bottle due to the funny ball fitting at the top but close inspection it doesn’t appear to be that. I ‘think’ it may just be an unusual way of inserting the bale, secured with resin. Also worth noting that the carving is ‘upside down’ from the direction of the bale – but this means that worn on a long chain this could be inverted into the correct orientation for viewing; a little odd but not unheard of. Definitely a talking piece!
