AEI Ruby Enamel & Yellow Gold Skull Charm Pendant c.1920s

Description

A beautifully made and very unusual skull’s head charm pendant; finely modelled with black and white enamel and sparkling ruby eyes. The forehead features the letters AEI which is Greek for ‘forever’ as well as the acronym for ‘amity, eternity, and infinity’. The buttery yellow 10k gold features initials and a maker’s mark to the reverse.

The skull has been a popular Memento Mori symbol in jewellery since the Georgian era; the ultimate reminder of transience of life here on earth. Combined with the AEI imagery of friendship this would make a wonderful gift or treat to oneself.

This stunning piece was originally a fraternity pin, but I had my jeweller professionally convert it into this much more wearable charm pendant. It looks striking on a delicate chain, mixed together with other charms, or even worn at the end of a fob chain. An exquisitely made, and hard to find, addition to any antique jewellery collection.
