Description
A stunning original antique Edwardian butterfly wing pendant; modelled as a large circular pendant with startling natural blue Morpho butterfly wing under glass, to a crimped bead edging and flower bale. All set in sterling silver, with a later vintage sterling silver belcher link chain.
ERA: Pendant is Edwardian c.1910s and chain is hallmarked for 1977.
MAKER: Attributed to Thomas L. Mott – this piece is unsigned but having handled this firms jewellery over a number of years I can confidently attribute it to this maker given the quality and design.
- TLM was founded in Birmingham, England in 1875 by Thomas Lee Mott. The TLM company revolutionized jewellery design by releasing a unique collection with wings of real tropical butterflies that were exhibited at the British Empire Exhibition in 1924 with Morpho butterfly wings brought from South America.
MATERIAL: Morpho butterfly wing, glass, and sterling silver (stamped to back of pendant, and chain has a full hallmark)
SIZE: 4cm tall not including bale. Chain is 22.5 inches.
WEIGHT: 18.7 grams (chain is additional 9.6 grams)
CONDITION: Great antique condition – the butterfly wing is in particularly lovely condition with just minimal age related wear to the outermost edges (see photos). No surface wear to the glass. Setting is crisply modelled and beautiful quality – a feature of this maker. I’m including the later chain that it came to me on as it’s a classic belcher link design, and goes very well with the pendant in terms of style and weight.
Box is for illustration only but this piece will come beautifully gift wrapped. Please see photos – more and video available on request.
CARE GUIDANCE: To protect the butterfly wing:
- do not spray with aerosols / perfumes
- do not immerse in liquids or wear while swimming / showering
- store in a cool dry place away from sunlight
SHIPPING: Free inside the U.S. and to the UK – American buyers please note that you’re responsible for any import charges to the U.S.
