Description

An unusual and supremely wearable Victorian gold bangle; finely modelled with rope twist detail, to a double termination that is closed with a hand-engraved monogramed padlock. The whole is in a warm soft rose gold with beautiful antique patina.

I’ve not been able to find many bangles in this style, only base metal and pinchbeck ones. It seems to be an American rather than English style piece as I’ve never seen one of these in Europe, and as I sourced this in America I believe I can safely attribute it to American origins.

This would have been a sweetheart piece; the monogram denoting the lovers initials, and the rope and padlock denoting constancy of love.

It is a striking piece and has a wonderfully modern look despite its age. It makes the perfect staple bracelet to wear on its own or stacked with others. A great addition to any antique jewellery collection, especially American collectors.

MATERIAL: 9ct gold – unhallmarked but tested.

SIZE: Measures 6.5″ circumference – please note this piece is not sizeable. Heart measures 0.5″ across.

WEIGHT: 9.4 grams.

CONDITION: Good antique condition – heavy weight but hollow construction with no splits or dents to the goldwork. Rope detail is crisp. Padlock closes securely and engraved detail is finely hand done and crisp, minimal wear. Just a couple of condition points to specifically raise:

The bangle is not entirely oval – it has bent a little out of shape with age. I had my jeweller look at it and we decided that given its age it was best to leave it be. It’s not noticeable when worn and does not affect wearability.
Hinge is a little loose – so the two sides can be wobbled a little independently. Again mentioning only for utmost accuracy, it does not affect wearability.

These condition points have been factored into pricing, as perfect it would be around £1k. The box for illustration only but this will come beautifully gift wrapped.
