Art Deco Faience Scarab Yellow Gold Ring c.1920s

This gorgeous Art Deco ring features an antique Egyptian faience scarab, set in buttery 9ct yellow gold handmade mount. The scarab is a beautiful shade of turquoise pottery and is likely an earlier antique bead, set in this mount in the 1920s to make this striking ring.

Perennial fascination with all things Ancient Egyptian mean that scarabs (symbolic of renewal and rebirth) have been popular in jewellery since the Victorian era. But this interest exploded with the discovery of treasures in Tutankhamun’s tomb in November 1922 at the Valley of the Kings, Egypt.

This piece is a very wearable example of the Egyptian revival from the 1920s and makes a great statement piece on it’s own or alongside other rings.

ERA: Vintage 1920s

ORIGIN: Antique Egyptian scarab, set in mount by English jeweller ‘S.B.&S Ltd’ – marked inside the shank. With Egyptmania in the 1920s it was common for antique Egyptian beads and scarabs to be shipped to England to be mounted in jewellery.

SIZE: Scarab measures 15 x 11mm and 7mm high from mount. Ring size a UK ‘Q’ / US size 8

WEIGHT: 3.3grams

MATERIAL: Faience pottery scarab and 9ct yellow gold (stamped inside shank).

CONDITION: Great condition. The scarab has some very minute nibbling to the edges but overall in great condition with no chips or cracks. Faience glaze is mottled in some areas, original to the piece, and I have not overcleaned this for fear of affecting the glaze. Setting is secure. Shank is a lovely thickness with minimal signs of wear. Box shown is for illustration – this ring will be shipped beautifully gift wrapped in an alternative box.

CARE GUIDANCE: This is a very wearable piece of antique jewellery in lovely condition. However, as it is original antique faience pottery some care in wearing needs to be observed to avoid damaging the scarab. As such recommend just as a ‘dress’ ring i.e. not everyday wear and no manual labour / sports / swimming!
