A stunning and rare original antique Art Nouveau ring. Featuring two luscious old-cut pink sapphires to a swirling naturalistic mount that’s accented with a spread of sparkling rose-cut diamonds.
This exquisitely made ring has so many beautiful details to it, and is a rare survivor of the Art Nouveau era that started in France in the 189os. Inspired by nature, jewellers used creative techniques to move away from heavy Victorian styles to make swirling delicate designs with open backed settings to illuminate the stones natural beauty.
This would have originally been termed a Ruby ring – as Ruby and Sapphire are both the Corundum gemstone. Essentially Sapphires come in all colours of the rainbow, but before gemmologicial testing this wasn’t known and so the red and pink stones got called Rubies. It’s only in recent years has it become more commonplace to use the term Pink Sapphire for these lighter, pink-toned Rubies as it is more gemmologically accurate.

ORIGIN: Likely English judging by the style of gold marks.
MATERIAL: Natural pink sapphire and diamonds, set in 18ct yellow gold (stamped 18ct inside shank).
SIZE: U.S. 6 / UK ‘M’ – please note this ring might be sizeable by a jeweller experienced in handling antique pieces but only by a small amount due to the setting of the stones.
Largest pink sapphire measures 4mm diameter. Size and shape precludes the calculation of a diamond weight estimate.
CONDITION: Beautiful antique condition – the pink sapphires have a rich pink hue of even colour and well matched. The diamonds are twinkling bright and well matched. Under magnification (using a 10x lens) there are some natural inclusions to the stones – but this is common in pink sapphires and old diamonds such as this – and to the naked eye this is a very handsome ring. Crisp gold mark and thickness of the shank shows this ring has had minimal wear.

CARE GUIDANCE: This is a very wearable piece as it’s well made and seems to have had minimal wear in its lifetime. However, she is still an antique and so I would recommend this as a dress piece rather than an engagement ring. Do not immerse in liquids or spray with aerosols, and store in it’s own box to avoid damage from rustling around with your other jewels.
