Description

A very rare and unusual large antique pendant; modelled as pandeiro (tambourine) with beautiful hand engraved scrolling decorations and set with antique Brazilian 200 Reis coins.

The coins are dated 1858, 1866, and two from 1868 – this combined with the unusual heavy quality construction and hand engraved details mean I believe it to be an original antique folk art piece from the 1860s. It’s a rare piece and its unusual large size makes it a fabulous statement either on a choker ribbon or worn on a long chain. It also looks great layered with other pieces.

ERA: Victorian 1860s

ORIGIN: Likely Brazilian

MATERIAL: Silver – the coins are 200 REIS coins. The body of the pendant tests as silver (approx 850-900 fineness)

SIZE: Body of pendant is 5.5cm diameter and 2.2cm across. Lovely oversized jump ring so this could take a very large chain if needed.

WEIGHT: 48.5 grams – a substantial piece.

CONDITION: Great antique condition. The body of the pendant is heavy quality and hand engraving is crisp with minimal signs of wear. The coins have been wired on using silver wire in a rustic way; one on either side and two at the bottom. Loop is sturdy. Chain is for illustration only.
