Late Georgian Silver Gilt Filigree Maltese Cross c.1820s

Description

A stunning late Georgian silver-gilt Maltese cross; finely worked with scrolling 3D arms and applied cannetille wirework decoration.

The Maltese cross is the symbol of an order of Christian warriors known as the Knights Hospitaller or Knights of Malta. A gold Maltese cross was presented to Lady Hamilton, wife of the English Minister to Naples, by the Emperor of Russia. This encouraged a vogue for the Maltese cross and it remained popular in the 1830s and 1840s.

This stunning piece is very wearable as a brooch or as a pendant thanks to the loop fitting. It’s a beautiful design and looks great on its own as a statement piece or layered with other items.

MATERIAL: Silver gilt (no hallmarks but tests as continental grade silver)

SIZE: 2.5″ across – a nice statement size!

WEIGHT: 19.4grams

CONDITION: Lovely antique condition. The silver gilt finish has a lovely soft aged gold glow and patina that comes with age. No loss of metal to the cannetille work. Simple hook clasp is secure. Due to the size/weight this piece does best worn on knitwear or a lapel, not a lightweight material like silk. The jump ring at the back is nice and solid but has not been soldered closed; you may wish to do so for extra security if you plan on wearing regularly as a pendant. 

Only one very minor points of condition to raise – when looking at the reverse, the the very tip of the brooch frame is not joined up on the bottom left. This doesn’t even look like damage but mentioning only because all the other  ‘points’ are joined. This is not visible from the front and in no way affects the durability of the pieces. Mentioning only for utmost accuracy!
