A stunning artists jewel made by the 1970’s German designer Klaus Neubauer. Little is known about his life and only a few pieces of his have come to market in recent years but his work is always defined by exceptional quality and unique design.

This knockout ring features sapphires, moonstones, and a single pearl, all mounted in rich buttery gold that has been hand manipulated into the most stunning sculptural design. The sapphires are a beautiful cornflower blue complemented by the warm blue shimmer of the moonstones – beautiful quality stones.

The 1970’s was an exciting era for jewellers as they took inspiration from cutting edge futurism, space, and technology; this exceptional ring always makes me think of the iconic Star Wars film landscapes that came out later that decade – particularly cloud city! This ring rightly sits amongst the incredible, museum worthy, design pieces being made by contemporaries such as Andrew Grima, Alan Gard, Gillian Packard, Bjorn Werkstrom at Lapponia etc.

ERA: 1972 – inscribed ’72 inside the shank

MAKER: Klaus Neubauer, Germany

MATERIAL: 18ct yellow gold (stamped 750) set with sapphires, moonstones, and a pearl

SIZE: U.S. size 5.75 / UK size N 1/2 – this is an open style of setting in that the band doesn’t join up all the way around – as such it could maybe go a little larger size with care if needed. The largest moonstone is 7mm across, sapphires are 2-3mm across.

WEIGHT: 11.8 grams

CONDITION: Great vintage condition – the stones are all secure and show little sign of wear. The shank is incredibly thick and weighty and the makers initials “KN ’72” are still crisp inside the shank.

CARE ADVICE: This is definitely a ‘dress’ ring perfect for cocktail parties – it is not a ‘daily wear’ piece! The stones are set high and in three claws so, whilst it’s very weighty and the shank is robust, care needs to be taken not to bash the taller, pronged, components of the setting. So enjoy whilst elegantly sipping cocktails in a 1970s style dress, don’t wear it doing housework or down the gym!
