Large Victorian Carnelian Heart Pendant c.1880s

Description

A striking large heart pendant; finely hand-carved from rich banded carnelian, with an elegant large jump ring bale to accommodate most chains. It has a beautifully intense red-orange colour, with the banding particularly visible when held up to the light.

Carnelian is a type of chalcedony that has been used in jewellery since neolithic times, especially in beads and in greek and roman times for wax seals. It acquired its present day name from the Latin word ‘cornum’ – which indicated the similar red-orange tones of the cornel cherry fruit.

These ‘specimen stone’ pieces are hard to date but the quality, size, and construction this is believed to be Victorian. It makes a fantastic statement piece worn on a delicate or chunky chain as well as layering well with other pieces. A great addition to any vintage jewellery collection.

WEIGHT: 21.6grams – a lovely substantial size

CONDITION: Great antique condition – no chips or cracks to the front, and only a very tiny nibble to the back point at the bottom of the heart (not visible when worn). The reverse also has two small drill holes that might have originally been for a brooch fitting (neither visible from the front).

When held up to the light you can see natural banding across the stone, as well as an internal only fissure from about the 8am position – please note this is entirely natural. Video available on request. Heavy weight jump ring is secure. Chain for illustration only.
