An unusual and most charming large Victorian silver sweetheart pendant; beautifully hand engraved with a scene of Brecon Castle, surrounded with daffodils, the national flower of Wales, and scrolling foliage.

With the advent of train travel British citizens at all levels of society, travelled about the UK much more widely than ever before and souvenir jewellery became a popular way of showing off your adventures, or bringing back a gift for your sweetheart. This is a particularly lovely example because of its rare subject, and unusually large size and shape.

MATERIAL: Sterling Silver and applied gilt vermeil detail to highlight the daffodils.

SIZE: 4cm tall – an unusually large example

WEIGHT: 4.6grams

CONDITION: Nice antique condition. There is traces of a pin fitment to the reverse but believe this was removed and made into a pendant during the Victorian era as the bale is contemporaneous. Engraving is rustic in style, and hand done. The silver ball decoration around the edge shows some light signs of wear commensurate with age but they’re all present, if a little misshapen. There are two deeper marks to the front engraving, at the 3 and 9 o clock positions; it’s hard to tell if this is damage from being shut in a jewellery box at some point in its life, or original to the design; either way they’re not particularly noticeable and mentioning only for accuracy. CARE GUIDANCE: Although it is a large size, she is not especially heavy and so a little care should be taken in wear and storage not to bash her about too much…she is an old lady after all.
