A stunning brooch by the collectible designer Marius Hammer (1847-1927).

Beautifully handmade in silver with a warm gilt vermeil finish, this piece epitomises the work of this iconic designer at the end of the 19th Century. It takes inspiration from the traditional folk jewellery of Norway, with scrolling wirework and dangling accents all skillfully set in an airy, elegant frame.

Marius Hammer founded his workshop in 1871 in Bergen, Norway. From around the 1880s, he specialised in delicate wirework and enamel pieces that honored their Norwegian heritage, before moving into more modern designs in the early 20th Century.

This piece looks particularly stunning when worn against darker fabrics, to make the details really pop. The perfect accent to any jacket or knitwear. A wonderful piece for any collector of Scandinavian jewellery.

ERA: Victorian c.1890s

MAKER: Marius Hammer – it’s quite hard to make out as its stamped to the narrow curve of the hook, but this piece does have the classic hammer shaped mark for this designer, along with the iconic design and construction of Hammer’s work.

MATERIAL: 830 grade silver (stamped 830S), finished with a gilt vermeil finish. Please note that this grade of silver was the commonly used grade of silver in antique jewellery at this time in Europe, rather than the later 925 grade.

SIZE: 7cm tall x 4.3cm wide

WEIGHT: 8.5 grams

CONDITION: Excellent antique condition – no loss of wirework, all three drops are present. Simple ‘c’ hook clasp works well. Only the very minutest detail to mention is the right hand drop has a very teeny pinhole which is only visible under magnification – I believe this is part of the original construction not damage – see last photo for detail at magnification.
