A rare original Victorian memorial pendant, paying homage to the HMS Victoria. The ships wheel style mount encases a hand-cut and hand-engraved cut of the ship in full sail. To the hull on one side is engraved ‘Victoria’. The whole in a warm buttery gold tone finish, although this piece is gilt base metal.

The HMS Victoria was named to celebrate Queen Victoria’s Golden Jubilee and was a flagship in the British Royal Navy; built in 1885 at a cost of £845,000, she set sail in April 1887. She was the first battleship to be powered by triple steam engine in addition to her sails, and although she featured lots of impressive cutting edge technology for the time, her service was unfortunately not so sparkling.

Alas on 22nd June 1893, while conducting manoeuvres in the Mediterranean, she was struck by one of her fellow fleet causing her to sink in 15minutes with the loss of 358 crew members including Vice-Commander of the British Mediterranean Fleet, Sir George Tyron. One of the few surviving crew was executive officer John Jellicoe who later went on to be commander-in-chief of the British Grand Fleet at the Battle of Jutland, the most iconic naval battle of WWI.

This may well have been worn on a watch chain, or a black velvet ribbon. It makes a great statement piece on its own or layered with other pieces.

MATERIAL: Gilt base metal and glass

SIZE: Pendant measures 3.5 cm tall not including jump ring. Jump ring is super large size – can take a large gauge chain.

WEIGHT: 10.2 grams

CONDITION: Lovely antique condition – gilt gold tone finish is still warm a buttery. Engraving to the ship is lovely and crisp. Some wear commensurate with age to both sides of the glass but this does not affect the overall look – its only visible in certain lights/angles so have tried to show this in the photos. Box and chain are for illustration only but this piece will come beautifully gift wrapped.
