NEIGER BROTHERS Rare Happy Laughing Buddha Tassel Earrings c.1930s

A very rare and unusual pair of original vintage earrings; beautifully modelled with a inky black hand-painted glass ‘Happy Buddha’, set to an intricately hand-beaded surround of black tassels, accented with red, turquoise, and gold beads. They’re a fabulous ‘chandelier’ length and look jaw droppingly cool on!

These earrings date to the late 1920s, early 1930s when there was a big trend in the Chinoiserie style where European designers paid homage to popular Chinese motifs. These spectacular earrings would likely have graced the evening look of a chic young lady as she frequented the heady dancefloors of Parisian jazz night clubs.

The Neiger Brothers were Czechoslovakian and founded their company in 1905 and operated until the 1930s. They specialized in high quality hand-blown press moulded bead work and jumped on popular trends of the day such as the Egyptian or Chinoiserie style. These beautiful beads are gorgeous quality and very redolent of their style, hence the attribution.

A stunning and very rare addition to any vintage jewellery collection.

ERA: Late 1920s / early 1930s

ORIGIN: European – the beads are Czech (unmarked but attributed to Neiger Brothers) and the style of earring fitting is very much French from this era.

MATERIAL: Glass beads, white base metal fitment with gold tone finish, composite backing.

SIZE: Total length of earrings is 9.5cm. The drop length (from pierced fitting to bottom of tassel) is 7.5cm long. Buddha measures 2.5 x 1.2cm.

WEIGHT: Each earring is 14.5grams – but very comfortable to wear due to the fitment style.

CONDITION: Great vintage condition. Painted details to the Buddha are finely painted and in great condition. All beaded tassels are present; no chips, cracks or damage to the beads. Hinged clips to the pierce fittings are nicely sprung; they are a white metal alloy with gold tone finish which shows some wear (see photos). One post is slightly wobbly but both are secure. Very wearable condition!

CARE GUIDANCE: To keep the bead work and painted details in such great condition do not immerse in liquids or spray with aerosols or perfumes as this could damage the finish / bead stringing.
