A stunning and rare antique silver bangle; beautifully designed for the Aesthetic movement it features an applied butterfly motif accented with hand engraved vermeil detailing, against a geometric back drop. The Victorians loved symbolism in their jewellery and in this case the butterfly represented life, death, and resurrection.
The Aesthetic movement in Victorian England was largely a reaction against the brutality and ugliness of the machines in the Industrial era. Although the machine age was a source of much wealth, the Aesthetic movement sought to counter it visually by celebrating nature, beauty, and craftsmanship in all forms of art, sculpture, literature, dress, and of course jewellery!
Victorian silver cuff bangles were made in large quantities but this is a very rare subject matter and so beautifully executed it’s a real collectors piece. It is also extremely wearable today – it looks great on it’s own or stacked with other pieces. I’m reluctantly parting with it from my personal jewellery collection so please do feel free to ask any queries!

MATERIAL: Silver (unhallmarked but acid tested)
CONDITION: Great antique condition. The engraving is crisp, charmingly done and in lovely condition. The butterfly has had a very tiny restoration done by my jeweller but this is extremely professionally done, and not identifiable (only mentioning for utmost transparency). Clasp is nice and secure – it ‘clicks’ shut nicely – but you could easily have a safety chain added for extra security if you wished.

SIZE: 6.4cm across x 5.5cm tall. Width 2.6cm. Oval inside circumference of bangle is 16.5cm – please measure your wrist with string to check fit as this fits a smaller sized wrist.
