Victorian Natural Coral Converted Button Silver Ring c.1930s

A really unusual statement ring; made from an original Victorian coral button, converted to a ring with the addition of a silver shank later, probably in the 1930s.

Coral has been a favourite in jewellery since ancient times, symbolising protection and it had a revival in the Victorian era thanks to an interest in the Antique, Egyptian, and Bedouin cultures. This pieces features the intense orange colour coral strung in circles and then sewn onto what was originally a button. It was likely converted to a ring around the 1930s when large statement rings with vibrant pops of colour became all the rage!

A fun and eyecatching piece of jewellery that looks great dressed up or down.

ERA: Antique Victorian coral button later converted to a ring

MATERIAL: natural coral, base metal and cloth (underneath of button mount), and silver ring mount (unhallmarked but tested).

SIZE: U.S. size 7 (UK size O). The head of the ring measures 1″ across.

CONDITION: Great vintage condition. Coral is evenly matched in colour; some natural undulations/striations as to be expected but no notable chips or cracks. Silver ring shank is relatively light (typical for the era when metals in short supply due to the war) but its secure. Box pictured is for illustration only – will be shipped in a fresh new box.
