Victorian Ruby & Diamond Paste Silver Horseshoe Necklace c.1880s

This charming necklace has been made from an original Victorian horseshoe brooch, sympathetically converted to make a wearable necklace with addition of a silver curb chain. The horseshoe is finely made in sterling silver, with pierced gallery sides, and set with rich foil-backed old-cut paste stones to imitate diamonds and rubies.

The Victorians loved jewellery that had additional meanings and this would originally have been a sweetheart brooch. The horseshoe for luck, the ‘diamond’ paste meaning constant love, and the ‘ruby’ paste symbolising passion! It might even have been a wedding gift for a bride and it would make a charming necklace for your sweetheart or lover today!

MATERIAL: Silver (stamped to reverse) and paste glass stones (foil-backed)

SIZE: 2.6cm tall, chain is 16″ long with several smaller jump rings so it can be worn at shorter lengths also – beautifully versatile.

CONDITION: Great antique condition; metalwork is solid and horseshoe is undented with wirework gallery in great condition. Foil backed stones are beautifully bright and sparkly. Some signs of the original brooch fitting to the reverse but these have been carefully removed and filed down so as not to catch on anything. Modern curb chain is secure and sympathetic to the era. Clasp works well.

CARE GUIDANCE: As these are foil-backed pastes it should not be immersed in liquids or have contact with aerosols/perfumes to help preserve the sparkle.
