A charming early Victorian Scottish silver brooch; set with hardstones and agates in an unusual geometric design. After Queen Victoria honeymooned at Balmoral, the Victorians developed an enduring love affair with Scotland and its ‘pebble’ stone set jewellery. This is a particularly lovely one as its from the early Victorian period as such a rare and unusual find.
AGE: Victorian c1840
MATERIAL: Silver (unhallmarked) and hardstones – including malachite.
SIZE: 6.5 x 2cm
CONDITION: Fair antique condition. The stones are well set and secure. There are two minor flaws to mention – the central malachite piece seems to have been set a little higher and then partly sheered off but this is only really noticeable when viewed from the side under close inspection or run your finger over it. Second, the reverse black setting has a fissure across the middle. As such, this brooch isn’t in perfect condition but given its age and design; its still a beautiful and very wearable piece.
