This striking Egyptian silver bangle is beautifully made; depicting a scarab set in pierced panel surround with Ankh detail to the ‘shoulders’ of the central panel.
Perennial fascination with all things Ancient Egyptian mean that scarabs (symbolic of renewal and rebirth) have been popular in jewellery since the Victorian era. This interest exploded with the discovery of treasures in Tutankhamun’s tomb in November 1922 at the Valley of the Kings and Egyptian motifs have remained popular ever since.
This piece is a very wearable example of the Egyptian revival and makes a great statement piece on it’s own or stacked with other bangles.
ERA: Vintage 1950s – Egyptian hallmarks are quite hard to read but this piece features the lotus flower (denoting silver), a ‘A’ with two dots next to it (denoting 800 silver). As the lotus flower does not have dots next to it I believe this means its pre 1966 and there is one other mark that almost looks like a ‘j’ with a dash to the left of it which could be a date letter from around the 1950s. I’m afraid I’m not experienced enough with Egyptian hallmarks to date this piece precisely but given the above, and the quality of the workmanship I believe this to date from the c.1950s.
