This is such a cool vintage medallion with two beautifully depicted scenes; the first showing St George (Patron Saint of Knights) slaying the Dragon, and the second shows a galleon in a tempestuous stormy seas with the words ‘In Tempestate Securitas’ (Safety in the Storm).
The Galleon side refers to Mark IV 37-41 where a storm tossed ship containing two frightened apostles was calmed by Christ.
These medals are of Hungarian origin and have a long and interesting history; the original design comes from a coin called the Mansfeld Thaler, which was first minted in 1521. The coin was commissioned by a Count Von Mansfeld as it honored his family’s patron saint. The Von Mansfeld family trade was warfare the symbol became adopted for luck and protection by his mercenary troops while away from home.
The original design for this interpretation of the amulet is credited to Hungarian engraved Christian Hermann Roth who was main engraver at the Kremintz mint from 1645-1690; and with some modifications it has been in production ever since.
This lovely crisp example dates to 1977 and would make a great talisman for any travellers in your life.
