An extremely rare and charmingly crafted WWI sweetheart bangle; formed as a hinged buckle from the warm rose copper of a shell casing. The buckle has been used since ancient times in jewellery to symbolism devoted love.
‘Trench Art’ is the term given to small handmade pieces of art that troops used to make to pass the time when in the trenches of the Boer War, WWI and WWII. Often formed of brass from the shell casings, the copper pieces are rarer; and this example is particularly nicely made being a hinged piece with carefully crafted working buckle closure. The young man that made this love token for his sweetheart must have devoted many hours to making it, in the midst of what one can only imagine must have been appalling circumstances…a truly beautiful reminder of the humanity of those fighting in such moments of darkness.
This makes a wonderful statement piece on its own, or stacked with other pieces. A really significant and symbolic addition to any antique jewellery collection.
AGE: This is an earlier piece of Trench Art so likely Boer War, or WWI at latest – judging from the craftmanship, and style of piece.
MATERIAL: Copper – a lovely warm rose colour
CONDITION: Great antique condition. The piece is very much handcrafted, and a piece of folk / trench art with the associated evidence of its manufacture but this is what defines it and adds to its value. The ribbed design is from the shell casing. Nicely hand engraved touches around the whole. Clasp works nicely, and hinge is well made.

SIZE: 6cm across x 4.3cm tall. Width 1cm. Oval inside circumference of bangle is 17cm – please measure your wrist with string to check fit as this fits a smaller sized wrist and is not adjustable.
