CHARLES HORNER Antique Silver Coin Bangle – Chester 1897

Description

A rare and unusual early Charles Horner bangle; formed as a circle with interesting dimpled hobnail textured finish to the outside, and smooth on the inside with beautiful full hallmark. The bangle carries six coins:

• 1816 George III Silver Shilling – with crest to the obverse
• 1826 George IV Silver Shilling – with crowned lion to the obverse
• 1836 George IV Silver Four Pence – with Britannia to the obverse
• 1880 Victoria Silver Six Pence – with crown and laurel to the obverse
• 1887 Victoria Silver Six Pence – with crown and laurel to the obverse
• 1890 Victoria Silver Shilling – with lion and harp crest to the obverse

Obviously these coins are earlier than the bangle itself, suggesting that someone collected these with dates meaningful to them, and had them added to the bangle when it was purchased new.

Charles Horner founded his firm in 1860 and went on to become one of the most prolific jewellers of the late 19th and early 20th Century, and you can read more about the firm here.

SIZE: Diameter of bangle is 6.5cm, internal circumference is 20cm. Largest coin is 23mm across.  This piece is not sizeable.

WEIGHT: 34.2 grams total weight including coins

CONDITION: Good antique condition – the bangle retains its original circular form, with no splits or tears. The pattern to the bangle is crisp, and hallmark clear and legible. Please note that the coins do show some extensive signs of wear commensurate with age and having been legalized tender in circulation for many years, but I was still able to make out the dates and what coins they are. Box for illustration only.
