Large Georgian Cut-Steel Horseshoe Brooch c.1830s

Description

A beautifully made and rare survivor from the late Georgian era; this stunning piece features tiny hand facetted cut-steel beads, accented with several larger square pieces.

Cut steel jewellery became popular during the Georgian era as a it sparkles wonderfully in candlelight to imitate diamonds. It remained popular throughout the Victorian era and into the 1920s. This particular example is striking because of its large size and wonderful condition.

A great addition to any antique jewellery collection this looks fabulous on a lapel or hat; or worn as a pendant hung from a chain.

ERA: Late Georgian – early 1830s – as determined by the style, simple hook clasp, and high number of facets and small size of the cut-steel. Later cut steel pieces in the Victorian era had fewer facets and larger size beads.

ORIGIN: Likely English.

MATERIAL: Hand facetted cut-steel and base metal

SIZE: 2 inches tall

WEIGHT: 14.6 grams – a nicely made weight

CONDITION: Beautiful antique condition. No signs of rust which is often the case with antique cut steel. Only one cut steel rivet missing – at the 7 o’clock position on outer edge but this is very tiny and not noticeable when worn. Simple ‘c’ hook clasp works well. Due to the size and weight this piece would be best worn on a linen or light knitwear, not lightweight silks.
